Bio.

Gina Pellón (December 26, 1926 Cumanayagua, Las Villas – March 27, 2014 Paris, France) was a well known Cuban artist who lived and worked in Paris, France from 1959 until her death. She was known for her abstract expressive paintings in strong colours usually depicting women. In addition to painting, Gina Pellon’s artistic career also encompassed printmaking, particularly lithography, writing poetry, tapestry design, costume design in which designed sets and full costumes for two full-length films directed by Marcel Hanoun. She also illustrated books for young French intellectuals as well as for Amnesty International. She graduated from the San Alejandro Academy, Havana, Cuba in 1954. After graduating she taught art, particularly drawing, at the Polytechnic Institute of Vedado in the Cuban capital until 1957. The last time she would exhibit in Cuba would be at the government sponsored national salon in 1959. In December of that year she left for France.

Her artistic career in Europe was a productive one. She had many individual shows in France, Denmark, USA, Italy, Norway and Belgium. One of the most highly respected Cuban artists in exile, Gina Pellón was a leading figure among Latin American artists which resided in Paris, France.; During her tenure in Paris, she met the Parisian Surrealists and connected with the CoBrA group, one of the principal avant-garde movements and milestones of European Abstract Expressionism. The CoBrA movement was coined from the initials of the home cities: Co as Copenhagen, Br as Brussels and A as Amsterdam. German Expressionism, Dutch Expressions as exemplified by Karel Appel, and Asger Jorn were some of the influences in Gina Pellón’s artwork.

Pellon’s style and palette are marked by sterling spontaneity, brilliant, sensual colours, energetic and free-flowing brushstrokes. She created vibrant compositions wherewomen were the main subject matter; Gina Pellón received many awards and honors in recognition of her contribution to the artistic world. Her work is part of numerous public and private collections around the world.
